GENTLY BALLROOM
About Gently Ballroom
In 2013, Laucinda was inspired to teach some classes for more elderly clients or those recovering from injury. However, adults of any age are welcome. Laucinda trained with Matthew Cutler from BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing (winner in 07′ with Alesha Dixon) and James White of White Diamond Entertainment to create her own brand ‘Gently Ballroom’. Elegant, gentle paced, recreational Ballroom and Latin dance steps without the need for a partner. This concept has been used by the City of York Council's over 50's exercise programme and Laucinda ran weekly classes for 11 years in Easingwold. Now, many groups such as the WI and private parties hire Laucinda for tasters of this class.
Dancing leads to improved balance, coordination, proprioception, strength, gait, agility, improved cognitive function in areas such as procedural learning and overall neuromuscular health and functional mobility, wellbeing and fitness levels.
A recent study showed that dancing prevents the development of dementia by 76%.
Studies also show that only 20% of males and 17% of females between the ages of 65 and 74 get enough exercise! It then drops to only 9% males and 7% females over the age of 75!
By continuing to dance past the age of 50, regular dance activity reduces the occurrence of a number of chronic conditions including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, hypertension, obesity, osteoporosis and depression.
Dance classes play such an important role in the elderly community. Laucinda is fully aware of and motivated by the benefits of dance to combat anatomical issues associated with the ageing population and stave off degenerative conditions such as dementia. Falls prevention and social isolation benefits are also strong considerations in favour of these dance classes.
