Benefits of Dancing
Dancing leads to improved balance, coordination, proprioception, strength, gait, agility, and improved cognitive function in areas such as procedural learning and overall neuromuscular health and functional mobility, well-being and fitness levels. Also, by continuing to dance past the age of 50, regular dance activity reduces the occurrence of a number of chronic conditions including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, hypertension, obesity, osteoporosis and depression.
A recent study showed that dancing prevents the development of dementia by 76%! Studies also show that only 20% of males and 17% of females between the ages of 65 and 74 get enough exercise. It then drops to only 9% males and 7% females over the age of 75.
We have around 140 swans, such lovely groups with a vast age range, some with physical ailments and some not, some with dance experience and some with none. Whether it’s a stiff knee through to Parkinsons Disease, standing barre free to seated all the way through, we can make the necessary adaptations for everyone to enjoy the class! Our classes are inclusive, fun and friendly with profound health and well-being benefits.

RAD Awards Recognition
Jorvik Dance is proud to be recognised by the Royal Academy of Dance. This year (2026) we have been shortlisted for the ‘Wellbeing and Inclusion Dance Champion Award’ (award ceremony on 25/7/26). Plus, in 2024 we were shortlisted for the ‘Dance for Wellbeing Award’.

Starting & Booking
Classes run mostly during school term time (plus some optional extra holiday workshops here and there). Newcomers are welcome at any point — block booking prices are adjusted if you join part-way through a half-term. Initial payment of just one class at £8.50 to try.
Payment is made either as a half-termly block booking (which works out cheaper at £8.50 per class, including other advantages) or as a drop-in/pay-as-you-go (£10.25 per class but trickier to get a place this way). Block booking Ts & Cs are in place, the details of which are available at the time of booking. Payment methods are bank transfer, card machine or payment links, or cash.
Class floating for block booked swans: we offer a service to the silver swans called class floating, whereby the opportunity is available to attend a different class location to your usual class if you cannot make your usual class, or take extra classes when you get back from a holiday to make up for what you’ve missed. This is obviously space-dependent and with many classes being sold out it does rely on someone being away in order for you to do that but we do find more often than not that we can accommodate people quite well in this way and it helps to make up any classes you may need to miss within one block (not over multiple blocks). All the classes are working on the same class plan so that it is easy to switch between classes if necessary.
Clothing-wise, some people wear relaxed fitness clothing such as leggings and t-shirts, some manage to attend class in relaxed trousers and a blouse or shirt if they need to be somewhere else quickly before or after class and some like to wear more formal ballet clothing for fun like black tights or leggings with black chiffon skirts, black fitted or smock tops and pink or black ballet shoes (we tend to go for a split sole so we do not have to work the arches so much with us being older).
One or two people already own ballet shoes/clothing and a high number of the regular attendees wear ballet shoes. Many people like to wait until they have at least attended one class to be sure they want to buy a pair of shoes. If you go to The Fancy Dance Shop in York and give my name, they will give you 10% off. Barefoot is ok for the first class, or a shoe with a sole that isn’t too grippy. Lastly, if you have underlying issues with your feet, or need to wear a gel pad or orthotics inner sole then you would find either a jazz shoe or a dance sneaker more accommodating.
